Open it Up?
so now that greg ended up playing by fluke...should we extend an official invite? as well as to jason? greg is a good player, as long as he sticks to it...and jason? golden tickets? worthy of discussion anyway, or an extension of the earlier discussion to the HON masses...
an opportunity for two decent players to up their games...???

i invited jason. not sure how long he'll be around for, but when we play, he's invited. fuck greg, he sucks. i'll add jason to the email list...
but what the fuck HON? every wednesday- this is how we do it. is this a challenging concept to grasp? let's get back on track next wednesday if the weather is decent. i'll be booking a date at the barn soon too, so ya'll will have no excuse, but last night was lovely and i don't understand why you all, other than jason and justin (and the other obvious excuses), pussied out. shame.
Upon further reflection (and playing with them more) I think that both Jason and Greg should be invited to HON polo. Maybe Naomi too (open an entire can of worms with her invite). Not Jeff, Max, Robbie or Matt.
Also 14 player may be a better number to get enough people out. I know DU is going to be MIA likley for a while. James has been to maybe one HON night.
Should we give these two guys the Golden Invite?
Who votes for and against opening up HON to those two players?
aw man, this conversation has been going back and forth for almost as long as we've been doing this. just to be clear - is this an opportunity for the top tier players to hone their skills further? or to bring some second tier players forward? 'cause the answer to that one (which seems to be shifting from the former to the latter, based on some of these posts) determines whether or not we invite more people. seein' as i've been a fan in general of inviting 'on the cusp' people, i'd be ok with greg, jason, and naomi being invited.
and if we pull off a saturday night showing this weekend, my attendance will jump to 2 nights.
these last few weeks have been pretty unenthousiastic about HON night and every night that I've been out, Jason and Greg have both come. I definitely think that Jason is a good player and certainly wouldn't slow down HON night. Greg however, is ok skills wise but is not all that fun to play with due to his lack of ability of even desire to try and pass the ball...if HON night ever resumes I vote yes for J DC and no for Greg (despite his enthousiasm for coming out regularly.
upon further reflection of my own, i feel that Jason should be there. i'm not sure about greg or naomi, but am open to it...
I was on their team last night and I was constantly think (mostly with Jeff but also of Jason) that I'm glad this is not at HON night because they are not dependable like the rest of us are in terms of pocketing goals and playing defense.
I think Greg and Jason are both solid players worthy of HON although Jason might have to get more familiar with how each of us individually play and same for him. Both would be good additions in my mind. I don't think we have a problem with too many players; I think we do have a problem with lights going out too early. Here is a number to call to speak to someone who can help us although not sure who exactly... 604 718 5812. I just got this number haven't tried yet.
Max and Jeff have a little ways to go but actually it might benefit them big time if they did come out and play with us.
Yeah that's the number and the guy we need to speak to is either Jim or Steve. Who is going to call and what angle do we take though? This should probably be a new thread but whatever. I think everyone knows my stance on Jason playing so I won't go into it again.
So, erm, what do we do about the lights? Pieter, looks like a job for our regional rep.
...from lisa who grew tired of my bitching on the list. woot, it worked! i can take care of this on monday, and not to worry, i can be very persuasive...
after tonight I further think that both Jeff and Jason cannot cut it. Although Jason is well ahead of Jeff
please explain (not that I'm fighting that hard for their inclusion, I'm just curious)

Ya, politics dudes. If we weren't willing to deal with it we should never have started HON night, but that's simply the price we have to pay, and we need to manage it as best we can. As I see it, allowing one of those aforementioned people in starts the problems of picking and choosing.
What does the current roster have that differentiates them from Jason, Jeff, Greg and Max? A consistent turn out for the last few years. The 12 of us know what to expect from one another and how to deal with each others bullshit. That's not the case with everone else.
Given that on some nights those players will out play some of ours,
being around long enough is the only way to draw a clear line.
i guess maybe we should have just told greg what the deal was when he showed up that night, and then his post wouldn't have created the ripple that it did. i don't think HON is out of the bag as much as we think it is, or at least people understand exactly what the deal is, but for the most part people don't care, and there will inevitable be politics, and i'm fine with that. though until it becomes an issue, i don't see a need for an open discussion about it.
i'm not convinced jason is any better than greg or jeff, and i don't care what he's contributed to DC polo, or world polo, this is EVBP. if jason comes to HON before greg or jeff, then we're kinda dissing our own members, and that ain't cool (unless jason's ability is obviously higher than those two, which in my humble opinion, isn't). so jason will be part of the EVBP family, if he isn't already, but i think we might be jumping the gun a bit here.
so fuck it, i say we stick to the 12 we have (unless you can argue convincingly that jason and greg are definitely more worthy than jeff and/or max, or if james never actually comes out, or just saves his magic for monday pick-up). i have no idea what martin is talking about with the booze shit and jason, or him being better than folks who already come to HON. hey, players can always have bad nights, or get themselves into slumps, but for the most part this group comes out enough to keep their games up, have the most potential, and will be travelling to tournaments. jason and greg are close, but you have to be able to say without hesitation that they are better than jeff, max etc to avoid a potentially hurtful can of worms. personally, i'm not able to say that, yet.
i've seen jason ON and when he is playing his best he is better than most at their norm.
...for a couple weeks.
jason is not HON material yet.
and neither is greg.
yes, they are both b-players, but this is high octane.
if we are having trouble with numbers we can open it up for sure, but i don't see us having that problem just yet. six is enough, eight is better, ten is awesome. if our average drops below eight i think we can bring them in on the numbers argument alone.
but otherwise i'd like a better reason than numbers or that they showed up by accident one night or moved here, ie that they are good enough.
making them wait a few weeks will make them want it, just opening the door right away opens the can of worms.
other questions:
what if, say, someone just kept on showing up uninvited? what would we do? say?
should there be a process for adding a new member? how do we decide? hazing? i say for sure they have to bring beer their first time.
why would someone continually show up uninvited?
they don't know that HON exists. greg clearly didn't that night.
well, i can't see it happening too often that someone will just swing by the courts, but if it does we explain that this is a *special* night (what we should have done with greg last time) by invite only, and you can play if you want, but if you don't keep the head up than you might get hurt, or someone might get really pissed off at you for bending their wheel. and the remind them that next week in invite only too, and then we don't invite them :)
whoops. sorry for the typos, but it makes it more fun figuring out?
I think Jason is definitely worthy of HON. I've witnessed him playing better than current HON players and think that his reputation precedes him. At tourneys Jason does tend to drink and play messy. He's not like that all the time. Personally I find him fun to play with and against and think that his presence at HON would enhance rather than detract from the HON experience.
As to Pieter's other questions, I don't foresee someone showing up night after night but, if they do, I think that calmly asking them not to play would probably be the best solution (there is a women's only polo as well so we are not the initiators of exclusivity). HON is out of the proverbial bag and I think people will understand that they can't play. It is also a good idea to let this person know that there are three other days during the week for them to play.
The process for deciding when to add a new member is, I think, just continuing what we are doing right now: Discussing on this forum. Not everyone will agree but we could always discuss and then have a vote.
which HON players do you feel he is playing better than?
Less waiting on HON night
I don't have a problem with giving greg/bald eagle the golden ticket.. I think our league play should be put on the back burner till we find a better way to get the teams sorted. Bring it hon!!!!
...apparently garnered some confusion from some folks, and especially jeff, who had posted about playing, and then nobody responded as it was HON, but then apparently there were the "eight of us" playing. jeff actually knows about HON, and supports it, but was pretty surprised that greg was seemingly invited.
i don't fucking know. i'm torn about opening it up. is greg that much better than jeff? oh the can of worms. and if jason is in, then what about london max? he knows about it too...
i've come almost full circle now, and am more in support of just sticking to the 12, to avoid irritating conflicts.
please contribute to the discussion.
...and be open about it. HON is what we do, and this is the 12 as of now. when it becomes obvious for more to be included, then we do so, but i'm not so sure we've reached that point yet...
I have a raised round 2" diameter welt on my right butt cheek. In the centre is some pooling blood that is various shades of blue, purple, and green. This particularly marking looks suspiciously like the pipe on Ace's mallet.
Pics soon to follow.
J.
ouch. sorry buddy. in my defense, it wasn't a high stick? can't wait to see the pics, i think. hope you don't have to miss any games because of it.
Both are up to snuff. We dont have too many players yet.
well, we have 12, which is ample, but some have a hard time showing up for whatever reason(s)...
Isn't that always going to be the case though? People are going to be out of town, ill or whatever. It'd be easier to get numbers to try out new venues like UBC if there were a bigger pool to draw on.
yes. it would be nice to have one more to round out another team but i would support this. i don't think we should take on any more just to "round out" and make teams easily divisible but it would be nice in a perfect world. i say let them play and then we'll keep looking to see who is coming down the pike.
