impressions of grandview park open house
Just curious to know what people thought of the park designs presented this evening at the open house for the grandview park renovation.
I wasn't able to stay too long, but read Rory's email that some people were overheard saying they aren't too happy about a multi-use sports area.
We've got the Parks Board's ear. One of the firms bidding to complete the design was also in attendance...
Any other rumblings? What did everyone think?

Too bad at the presentation the C option was not complete. It looks better with everything drawn in correctly. I think maybe it would have had more support.
Thanks for keeping us all informed Lisa.
Said I'd pass on this email from Carmen Mills, organiser of Car Free Commercial Drive:
"i was super impressed with the bike poloistas presence at the grandview park meeting - great work all of you for standing your ground, i was worried about the bike polo - way to go!"
And they are removing that large tree by the west side of the court at the stairs too.
Ok, so they got C sorted out. http://vancouver.ca/parks/info/planning/grandviewpark/pdf/OpenHouseConce...
2 poss improvements from pov of polo:
1) Two multiuse courts
2) Run the courts East West as we use them now not North South under the big trees as in the plan. We know how covered in leaves and crap the courts can get at times
What was the point of having Option C at the discussion night? I guess that means no more EV Crown tourneys at Grandview...Only options a and b are shown here:

Just posted about this on the list. I liked C of all the options (DU liked this too - met him on the way out). If we were the only people using the court then I could see B being best, but there'll be lots of people wanting to spend the weekend on this newly minted court.
Part of me would like to see the extra greenspace but then the polo part of me would like to see the same size court. There's enough demand for that kind of recreational space and it would be nice to have the added space for tourneys.
So the smaller court rules out Options A & B. It's a pity they are not thinking of having two multipurpose areas instead of keeping the tennis courts for C. Are there really that many tennis players in East Van to warrant all these tennis courts?
The architect was asked what he's going to do about the "riff raff" and separately he was asked whether the "polo people" wanted the multi-use court and then he was asked "how do you know the polo people want that?" He explained he talked to us.
I asked about low level lights on the court - he suggested highly unlikely that existing lighting would change much.
Carmen Mills suggested moving the cenotaph (keeping it, but moving it along the permimetre). All plans leave it where it is. There were murmurings about the symbolic value, what the legion might think. Don't think that's likely to happen.
