GOALS

So there has been much talk in London about goals, cones or nets? infinte goal height?

Karlsruhe, Germany had a very polished indoor tourney this last weekend. They used specially made Polo goals... after the tournament the consensus was that the goals are the way forward, the future of polo.

Here is a link to a blog entry about it from Yorgo:

opinions?

The goals in Chicago were designed out of PVC and they were okay. The nets in Karlsruhe look good in terms of dimension and stability. Perhaps we can figure out something that has the benefits of both but none of the drawbacks.

Chicago: Easy to break down and transport. Doesn't fuck you up when you crash it. Cons? Not all that stable. Tough to get the ball out (though this may be a problem with ALL nets).

Karlsruhe: Nice, taut netting. Stable. Shallow (ball isn't stuck in the net as easily). Cons? Heavy, dangerous posts. Difficult to transport.

hey Bob, the soccer nets are what i'm basing my idea's from, only alittle more beefy.

Looking again at Max's link that goal setup looks just the thing

Has anyone scoped five-aside-soccer nets or the ones that kids use for soccer? They look similar in size to our needs and are made of hollow plastic tubing, so portable and possibly customisable with a little sawing. Hockey goals I guees are too small and tall.

What size would be "regulation" anyway? Top of the cones?

Sounds great Max!
I will be in Ottawa for a week, but when i get back we should get together and go to home de pot,and check shit out... also maybe a small collection from people to get 1 made.
I do have some ideas..

yeah chris, i'd be up for it, matt has access to welders..

as justin was saying perhaps, pvc would be better, there may be a way of fabricating a prototype from plumbers pipe? with some sand inside...

i was always a fan of the cones, but i like the idea of the net being a little bigger than a bike length, keepers actually have to keep.

We need to go to nets at tournaments. Ballz Deep lost the worlds ona none goal in my opinion. LA was a bit of a joke with cone goal controversy. One major problem I see is this will make it more difficult to get to goalie out of the goal but it is already hard to get them out. The German design looked alright as see on Bikepolo.ca

What about PVC or some other such lightweight plumbing tubing? Less injury risk, maybe more transportable? Could be designed like the ones used in the Karlsrue tourney so that there is no cross bar and perhaps collapsible? I could help but I'm away until early march.

It think nets are a great idea too...only concern for regular play is that we need to store them somewhere and the top of the night court green container may not be an option anymore because all of our boards and cones were 'redistributed' as of last night....

I think they are a great idea, and will be the way of the future for our sport..
Max do you have tools to weld(you are a welder, No) When i get back from ottawa, is there anyone who want to sit down and make a plan to get some made?

I'm coming round to nets - at least for tourneys. Takes any element of doubt out of the game about the accuracy of the shot, and you don't have all these crazy variations about passing or not passing through the goal from city to city.

It wont clear up quite all the controversial goals, just most of them. There will always be discussions about whether the ball went over the line and whether someone shot the ball after it went over the line.

In the final analysis, nets would have made no difference in this instance, apart from the fact that Piet wouldn't have made the pass if there was a net in place.
